Amps to kVA Calculator
The following Amps to KVA conversion calculator will convert the current “I” in amperes “A” to apparent power “S” in kVA “kilovolt amperes”, VA “volt-amp”, mVA “millivolt amps” and MVA “mega volt amp”.
To calculate the kVA rating of a machine from the amperage rating, just enter the value of current in amperes, voltage in volts, select power supply system (single phase or three phase) and hit the “Calculate” button to the get the result of apparent power in kVA, VA, mVA and MVA.

Conversion with Line to Neutral Voltage (VL-N)
kVA = S = 3 x VL-N x I ÷ 1000
Where:
- S = Apparent Power in Volt-Amps
- V = Voltage in Volts
- I = Current in Amperes
- VL-L = Line to Line Voltage in 3-Phase Circuits
- VL-N = Line to Neutral Voltage in 3-Phase Circuits
Note: There is no concept of apparent power in DC circuits as there is no frequency, power factor and reactive power exists in DC supply systems.

How to Convert Amps to kVA?
Keep in mind that you must know the value of current and voltage to calculate the kVA rating of a machine.
Single Phase Amps to kVA Calculation
Apparent Power in kVA = (Voltage in Volts x Current in Amperes) ÷ 1000
S = (V x I) ÷ 1000
Example:
Find the kVA rating of a single phase transformer if the primary current rating is 120 amperes and RMS voltage is 120V.
Solution:
S = (120V x 125A) ÷ 1000
kVA = S = 15kVA
Three Phase Amps to kVA Calculation
Calculation with Line to Line Voltage
Apparent Power in kVA = (√3 x Voltage in Volts x Current in Amperes) ÷ 1000
S = (√3 x VL-L x I) ÷ 1000
Example:
Calculate the apparent power in kVA if the value of current is 28A and RMS voltage is 208V (line to line) three phase.
Solution:
S = (1.732 x 208V x 28A) ÷ 1000
kVA = S = 10kVA
Calculation with Line to Neutral Voltage
Apparent Power in kVA = (3 x Voltage in Volts x Current in Amperes) ÷ 1000
S = (3 x VL-N x I) ÷ 1000
Example:
Calculate the rating of three phase transformer if the rating of three phase RMS voltage is 240V (line to neutral) and primary current is 25 amperes.
Solution:
S = (3 x 240V x 25A) ÷ 1000
kVA = S = 18kVA
